SUMMARY

Alice Pokon is from Kandep District, Enga Province, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (UNITECH), graduating in 2024. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Agriculture at UNITECH as a recipient of the EU-FCCB fully-funded scholarship.

Her research focuses on the development of an alternative pig feed using enzyme-treated coffee pulp as a key ingredient for weaner pigs. The study is motivated by the high feed costs and food-source competition that smallholder pig farmers in Papua New Guinea face, particularly with staple crops such as corn. By formulating a low-cost, nutritious, and sustainable feed supplement, Alice’s work seeks to improve growth performance in pigs while simultaneously addressing the problem of agricultural waste. Using coffee pulp in feed formulation reduces environmental pollution and supports more responsible management of agricultural by-products, aligning practical solutions for farmers with broader environmental and climate objectives.
